LEAVE YOUR HANDPRINT, TOO!

5 september 2008

From 10 am to 16 pm on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th of September 2008 DBR Metro Project Directorate kindly invites you to the Baross Square to leave your handprint on the construction site of the Keleti Railway Terminus station of the 4th line of the metro.

The boarding fence of the site on Baross Square will be the “venue” of exhibition of handprints taken. The metro builders will treat you to green ice-cream, mineral water and gifts commemorating the 4th line of the metro.
According to the results of the recent surveys the backing of the 4th line of the metro is around 80%, that is, eight out of ten residents of Budapest share the view that the capital needs the 4th line of the metro. Hundreds of residents of Budapest have come today to Baross Square to leave their handprint as a token of their accord. This two-day event continues tomorrow, and all supporters of the project who impatiently wait for the chance to take this fast, quiet, unmanned (fully automatic) and obstacle-free means of transport of truly European standard are all welcome. This event is part of a campaign organized by the DBR Metro Project Directorate to demonstrate its commitment to new branches of art and contemporary ways of artistic self-expression.
With the series of exhibitions and events started earlier the metro builders intend to promote culture and shape the cityscape. One of the most attractive and most modern metros in Europe is under construction in Budapest, and the ambition of builders is to make it the modern symbol of the 21st century Budapest. As part of this ambition we intend to support, in the phase of metro implementation, modern art including extraordinary initiatives, and add to the cityscape by turning the boarding fences of metro construction sites into works of art.
Since last year the boarding fences of the Rákóczi Square station host an exhibition of works of modern art, and the best works of a global graffiti contest have been exhibited. This spring young artists painted a metro train on the boarding fence on Kálvin Square promoting the cultural events of the district. A giant view introducing the antique and contemporary means of metropolitan transport can be seen on the boarding fence on the Gellért Square, to be followed in the near future by similar works of art on the Fővám Square and Kálvin Square demonstrating the splendor of the Hungarian capital. Our plans also include the legitimating for graffiti of boarding fences on Etele Square and Népszínház Street; moreover, this autumn an underground theatre performance and concerts are planned, too.
