DURING THE LAST WEEKEND OF MARCH, BUSES WILL REPLACE METRO LINE M4 DUE TO TESTS REQUIRED FOR THE FINAL COMPLETION CERTIFICATE

24 march 2015

On Saturday and Sunday 28 and 29 March 2015, Metro Line M4 will be out of service due to tests conducted by the transport authority, buses will replace M4 trains along the entire line, and the nos. 47 and 49 day trams will run twice as frequently as usual. Started in the middle of March along Metro Line M4, the special testing period with no train attendant intervention has come to its second stage.

The tests are made up of three periods built on one another; the first stage had trains run without any attendant intervention for ten days in the non-service areas of the terminal stations; the second stage during the weekend on 28 and 29 March will have trains running along the full line with no train attendant on. The special tests are required by the final completion certificate: the line has to prove that it is capable of safe and reliable service in actual circumstances without human intervention.

It should be noted, however, that all the passengerless commissioning test runs of the first automatic train-control metro line of Budapest conducted by the contractor, the employer and the transport authority were carried out without drivers in fully automatic mode, as are the on-going tests in traffic operation. The trains have temporary driver cabins though; but the only duty of attendants seated in them is to supervise the movement of the trains and intervene in case a problem arises. The movement and operation of the trains are fully provided by the central automatic train control system.

Following the issue of the final completion certificate, the driver cabins will be removed, and instead of the on-board train attendants, the trains will be supervised by the central traffic controller and the station dispatchers, and will be running at the highest level of automation. The tests commencing in mid-March with the participation of the experts of the National Transport Authority were initiated by the employer and the contractor in order to fulfil the requirements prescribed by the temporary completion certificate, the aim of which is to prove – after the gradual omission of the train-attendant intervention – that what was operational on the designer table and the technical documentation is operational in actual life circumstances. In the course of the special tests, experts including Siemens staff continually examine the operation of the system in various – often pre-modelled – situations.

The objective of the test in traffic operation, which began at the end of March 2014, was to filter out and remedy minor faults during operation. The number of these continually decreased, and, as a result of the reliable operation of the system, no safety-critical problems occurred in almost a year. Insofar as the system, having passed the certification procedure conducted by notable home and international firms and performing in accordance with the strictest safety level during the two stages of the testing, an expectedly two-week period of testing in traffic operation with attendants not allowed to intervene in case of a problem after a certain period of time and under the supervision of dispatchers is planned to commence in the middle of April. Detailed information on this stage will be duly provided.

Traffic along Metro Line M4 on 28 and 29 March

Metro Line M4 will provide service for the whole day on both Saturday and Sunday 28 and 29 March 2015; therefore, replacement buses marked M4 will be running between the M4 stations of Kelenföld vasútállomás (Kelenföld Railway Station) and Keleti pályaudvar (Keleti Railway Station). The route of replacement buses will not near the M4 stations of Újbuda-központ, Fővám tér and Kálvin tér; these stations will be approachable by the nos. 47 and 49 trams, and, due to their major role in the M4 replacement, their frequency will be twice the usual: trams will follow one another every 3-4 minutes along their shared sections. The M4 replacement buses will provide transfer opportunities to Metro Line M2, apart from Keleti pályaudvar (Keleti Railway Station), at the metro stations at Blaha Lujza tér and Astoria, and to Metro Line M3 at Ferenciek tere instead of Kálvin tér. For passengers travelling between Budapest and Budaörs, the no. 240E bus will run every 10 instead of 15 minutes, with transfer possibilities to both the M4 replacement buses and the nos. 47 and 49 trams. Parallel, the no. 40 bus will run less frequently, every 15 instead of 10 minutes over the weekend. In the section between the Budaörs housing estate and the Gazdagréti út, the running frequency of the two buses will not change.
