Tram lines No 4 and No 6 are closed for traffic on the weekend due to the construction of the fourth line of the metro

31 may 2007

Due to the construction of the new metro line buses replace tram lines No 4 and No 6 on the weekend. The tram traffic is suspended due to two jobs to be implemented in a strictly harmonized manner (for the details click here).

1. Due to the construction of the Rákóczi Square station the experts relocate a water pipeline to be connected to the water mains beneath the nearby tram track on the Grand Boulevard (Nagykörút). For this reason this section of the tram line will be closed for traffic. This job is needed because the water utility line would impede the construction of the station.
2. The construction of the Fővám Square station will affect the track of tram No 2. The affected section is likely to be closed for traffic starting from June 21. In order to assure in this period unobstructed operation of tram service between Jászai Mari Square and Belgrád Quay the tracks of tram No 2 and trams No 4 and 6 on the Grand Boulevard (Nagykörút) will be connected in this period. Before the daily working hours tram No 2 will travel to Jászai Mari Square, to its own track, through this bypass and returns to the depot. (This does not mean that it would travel along the Grand Boulevard (Nagykörút); it only means that tram No 2 will reach the depot via this route.)
On Saturday and Sunday (from dawn on June 2 to dawn on June 4) trams No 4 and No 6 will be replaced by buses along the entire line.
How does the construction of the Rákóczi Square and Fővám Square stations proceed?
The construction of the Rákóczi Square station was started this spring. Since then utility lines have been replaced and relocated, and then the construction of the diaphragm walls began on May 29. In building the station, the contractors do their best to avoid the felling of trees, including the protected plane trees on the Square. For this reason, part of the station will be built from beneath the surface using mining methods. The likely completion of construction of the station is in the second half of 2009. On Fővám Square, the construction of the diaphragm wall started on May 14, and it is currently underway. The construction works are likely to be completed by the middle of 2009.
