The second drilling shield arrived at Tétényi Road Station

25 october 2007

The second tunnelling shield has arrived at the Tétényi Road Station on 25 October 2007. The first shield broke the station wall on 13 September 2007. Thus, the total length of complete tunnel sections is more than 1.5 km.

The work of the second shield, installed for drilling the North Tunnel called Eva, was slightly hindered by a soil collapse during the construction of the station ventilation shaft. The problems caused by this collapse had to be safely cleared before proceeding with the work. The cave was backfilled with lightweight concrete to allow the development, with the maximum level of safety, of the ventilation shaft and the reception of the drilling shield christened Bochkor.
The total length of the tunnel sections interconnecting the Kelenföld Railway Station and the Tétényi Road Metro Station is 733.5 m. Each tunnel is composed of 489 tunnel rings. This means that 5868 tubbing modules have been installed into the tunnel after the excavation of some 50000 cubic meter of soil.
The shield is expected to stay in the station box structure for a 2 or 3 weeks period. Normally, one of the drilling shields advances some meters ahead of the other one to minimize the potential of surface displacements and settlements. The shield, christened Boros and used for drilling the South Tunnel, started to operate a few days ago, after some weeks rest, and is advancing on its nearly one-and-half kilometre long way to Bocskai Station, and is expected to arrive at the station early next year. This will be the longest continuous tunnel section.
The peculiarity of the Tétényi Road Station is that the sunlight may reach, through a glass dome, down to the platform level thus providing natural light in the station. The station was designed to provide easy access between the subway and the shopping centre planned to the corner of Etele Road and Tétényi Road. The station structure finishing work and, finally, the interior decoration work will commence as soon as the shields leave the concrete box structure.

Data of the Tétényi Road Station:

Effective platform area: 1100 m2
Subsurface depth: -14.5 m
Number of escalators: 4+2
Number of elevators: 2
Number of exits: 1
Station type: Centre platform type
