The Fővám Square station of the Metro was granted the Media Award for Architecture 2006 for the best architectural design of the year
In cooperation with seven Hungarian media (Élet és Irodalom; Heti Válasz; HVG; index.hu; Kultúrház (mtv); Magyar Hírlap; and Népszabadság) Epiteszforum.hu, the daily architectural news portal announced the Media Award for Architecture the second time. In 2006 projects were granted a Media Award in two categories: Plans and Completed Projects.
In the first round of voting the visitors of epiteszforum.hu picked twelve projects each of 218 plans and 64 completed projects; in the second round of the “Plan of the Year” category the Selection Committee gave the highest number of votes to the Fővám Square station of the Metro. The designers of the station are Tibor Dékány, Sándor Finta, Ádám Hatvani, Orsolya Vadász (sporaarchitects).General Designer: Palatium Stúdió Ltd- Zoltán Erő, Balázs Csapó.
In the evening of October 19th 2006 the Selection Committee representing the seven media convened in the Conference Room of Műcsarnok (Exhibition Hall) granted the Media Award for Architecture 2006 to the winning project/plan in the form of a public scoring.
The Fővám Square station is built by the use of a box structure of cutoff walls and mined sections of the tunnel. A further feature adding to the complexity of the structure is that the cross-under of tram line No 2 and the pedestrian subway need to be built at the same location. After the opening of the new line of the Metro the Fővám Square is likely to become one of the key entrances to the downtown area (Belváros).
In addition to the moving stairs elevators will assist the motor handicapped people and those arriving with prams and large packages in using the public transport. The construction of the station is scheduled to begin in the first half of the next year and it will be completed in the second half of 2008.
