SEE-SAW AT TWENTY METER DEPTH

10 september 2008

The Ráday Culture Street (Culture Street) plans an extraordinary open-air theatre show at the Rákóczi Square station of the 4th line of the metro under construction. The show is to begin at 7.00 p.m. September 25th 2008, at depth well below 20 m.

The show tops Kata Dobó and Tibor Szervét in the popular romantic comedy of the Pinceszínház (Cellar Theatre), the See-Saw (Libikóka) directed by István Verebes.
It is our intention to invite, in addition to journalists and other guests, the general public to this extraordinary event. Send your name and phone number to info@kulturucca.hu to participate at the draw to be one of the fifteen lucky invitees to attend this show together with your partner.
The cooperation between Ráday Culture Street (Kulturucca), the DBR Metro Project Directorate and Swietelsky Hungary Ltd. is not the recent one: in May the students of the art school painted the metro train on the boarding fence of the site of the Kálvin Square metro station. This collaboration is meant to attract attention to the events of the Ráday Culture Street also sponsored by the Municipality of Ferencváros (9th district).
With the series of exhibitions and events started earlier the metro builders intend to promote culture and shape the cityscape. One of the most attractive and most modern metros in Europe is under construction in Budapest, and the ambition of builders is to make it the modern symbol of the 21st century Budapest. As part of this ambition we intend to support, in the phase of metro implementation, modern art including extraordinary initiatives, and add to the cityscape by turning the boarding fences of metro construction sites into works of art.
Since last year the boarding fences of the Rákóczi Square station host an exhibition of works of modern art, and the best works of a global graffiti contest have been exhibited. Apart from the metro train painted on the boarding fence on Kálvin Square a giant view introducing the antique and contemporary means of metropolitan transport can be seen on the boarding fence on the Gellért Square. The print of nearly one thousand human palms decorate the boarding fence on Baross square; the boarding fences on Etele Square and Népszínház Street have been legitimized for graffiti, and similar works of art demonstrating the splendor of the Hungarian capital are planned on Fővám Square and Kálvin Square. Our plans also include an extravagant concert in the autumn.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
Life produces an untold number of unforeseen or puzzling situations in the relations between man and woman. We tend to think that nothing new around, but then we have to realize how wrong we are... Probably the same applies to the story of Jerry and Gittel. It is a wonderful play in the authentic interpretation of two marvelous actors. Love stories are usually staged to end with the happy communion of the protagonists, unless it is a tragedy. Gibson’s play offers a far more realistic approach. In fact, twosome games are but a see-saw of emotions, endless attempts of two people to create and maintain shared living.
Jerry, the young attorney escapes from his cheating rich wife and her family, who have been instrumental so far in building his career and welfare. His self-esteem is shattered, he has lost his faith and he lives from one day to the other when he gets acquainted with Gittel, an unsuccessful dancer dreaming about unattainable success. The only thing they have in common is their shattered self-esteem, but it is enough for them to hold on together in an effort to build a common future. This story is amusing and sad, yet truly hilarious all through to the end.
