No risk presented with omission of the main ventilation

24 january 2008

It means no risk at all to omit a main ventilation structure of metro 4 previously intended between the Tétényi and Bocskai road stations to Petzvál street. Following a long and detailed scrutiny of the drawings, both the Engineer and Investor decided to replace some functions of the structure with separate engineering design alternatives.

With reference to the design works for ventilation structures, more technical alternatives existed even earlier. As a result of the review noted in order to replace three functions of the structure at Petzvál street individual technical solutions will be realized as per the drawings and according to the decision, by far bearing in mind the requirements of residents and the authority, and respectively the safety of passengers.

There is no possibility to relocate the escape, water collecting and ventilation structure, as its location is exactly defined by the line geometry. For water gullies designers will resolve direct surface connection such way as the system will forward collected water not directly to the surface, but into the water collector of the Bocskai road station. For review of the ventilation function DBR Metro Project Directorate involved experts from abroad also, ensued from replacement of this function the capacities of ventilation devices need to be increased at both neighboring stations. During investigations in connection with the escape function of the structure and discussions with the fire department a standpoint evolved that evacuating may be more efficient, if the passengers are being evacuated almost horizontally to the closest, or in terms of evacuating to a more favorable station, using connecting tunnels provided similarly to the other parts of the line.

So those press news saying that omission of the main ventilation structure would risk human lives are not realistic. Engineers in any case design the system not to allow occurring that trains get stuck between two stations.
