NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY AND THE DBR IN THE MATTER OF THE „CH” BUILDING

14 october 2008

The experts of the DBR Metro Project Directorate, the Engineer, the contractor, the representatives of the Consortium recording the building displacements, and also independent experts agreed today that the structural stability of Building „CH” of the Technical University is currently not under risk. The decision taken this morning is also about the acceleration of recovery of damages caused by metro construction, speeding up of remaining works on the St. Gellért Square metro station and intensification of monitoring of the condition of buildings.

As reported earlier the site surveys carried out so far have confirmed that the settlement of Building „CH” of the Technical University remains below the value estimated by the experts based on the preliminary surveys of condition of the building. Settlement / subsidence is an unfortunate yet natural concomitant of civil engineering activities carried out in the vicinity of old buildings, therefore Building „CH” of the Technical University was qualified as an object exposed to high risk. Prior to the commencement of the construction works there were cracks and symptoms on the building indicating settlement; the general condition of the building was rather poor, so metro construction was only expected to deteriorate its condition.
At the meeting held today the participants agreed that the building in question is currently not exposed to structural risk, yet DBR will provide intensive monitoring and upgrade the system detecting the displacement of the building. Through the Engineer the DBR also instructed the contractor to speed up the remaining works on the supporting structure of the St. Gellért Square metro station. The BAMCO Consortium took notice of the request and agreed to take immediate measures. The experts also agreed on the urgent repair of damages of non-structural nature such as cracks and peeling-off of mortar. The DBR will provide on-going information on the measures taken to the Economic and Technical General Directorate of the Technical University.
