METRO4: Boarding Fence Exhibition at Rákóczi Square Station

5 october 2007

An irregular art event makes, even in the literal sense of the word, the construction work more coloury at the Rákóczi Square Station of Metro Line 4.

During the week prior to opening, fifteen works of art will be created on the boarding fence used to separate the construction area from the market hall.
Some of the exhibitors are newly graduated or graduating artists while others are internationally known and recognised contemporary ones; but whatever they may be, they all undertook to take part in a really irregular and unprecedented experiment titled Metro4: Palánk (Metro4: Boarding Fence)
Such street and plaza artwork is identified as public art by Anna Kerekes, the originator and the Curator of the exhibition.
The meat of the exhibition was summarised by the Curator as follows: “This is a non-profit exhibition, which, by utilizing the surprising, unusual and, first of all, transitional geometry of space that developed in this area, is intended to point at the more-and-more accelerated transformation and development of Budapest. The artists are supposed to reflect to these changes and their relation to the given space is expected to exert influence on the approach of the local residents and the visitors.”

“The components and procedures used in public art will all appear in the exhibition. These are as follows: graffito, print, graphics, collage, etc. The creators are representative of various generations, conceptions and techniques. They are supposed to express their individual viewpoints in a way adapted to the particular geometry of space. In addition to the technical development of the city, they will even eternalize the social and cultural changes caused by this development.”

It is planned that the exhibition will be open for the visitors till the end of next year. The construction area will change next year due to the progress of the station construction work, thus the boarding fence will need to be relocated that time. Due to the non-profit character of the exhibition, the creators and the Curator will not receive any payment for their work, and they are not even allowed to commercialize their displayed artworks either now or in the future.

The site for this unusual cultural event in the downtown of Budapest was provided by BKV Ltd DBR Metro Project Directorate and SwO Metro 4 „Rákóczi tér” Építő Kkt (Construction General-Partnership). The exhibition was also promoted by: The City Hall of Budapest and the Sawyer Miller Group.
