Metro construction at the Keleti Railway Station(TRAFFIC CHANGES: the construction works of the fourth line of the metro arrived to yet another station)
The temporary terminus of the first section of the new line of the metro will be at the Keleti Railway Station, providing transfer between metro lines No 2 and No 4. The construction of the station begins on May 10 with the replacement of the utility lines.
In the first stage of construction the contractors will relocate sewers, water-, gas- and electrical lines that would impede the construction of the station.
From May 10 on the replacement of an important water line in the 7th district in the section of the Garay Street between Hernád Street and Rottenbiller Street will begin. The works scheduled to be completed by June 20 will also affect the Thököly Road. The affected areas will be closed for motorist traffic, and for parking as well.
For two months starting from May 20 an underground optical cable will be replaced in the neighborhood of Baross Square. The works will begin from the Fiumei Road, and after crossing the Rákóczi Road will proceed to the Rottenbiller Street. The cable will be replaced starting from Rottenbiller Street through Garay Street and Bethlen Gábor Street to Péterffy Sándor Street. The works will include demolition of road- and sidewalk pavements and closing of one traffic lane for traffic.
The station structure runs beneath Thököly Road, in parallel with the latter. Preparations to the temporary redirection of traffic required for the construction of the future station are also made now. The works will begin in the second half of May with the correction of the curb, affecting sections of the sidewalk and the traffic lanes.
In the second stage of works even more utility lines will be replaced, the design of which is underway. Only after the completion of such relocation works expected in the autumn may the construction of the station begin. Then the external walls of the station will be erected underground using the diaphragm wall construction method.
Soon, at the end of May, the second exit of the Keleti metro station of the 2nd line of the Metro will be completed. The construction started in 2005. This new exit is required because the currently existing one will be closed due to the construction of the new station.
The tunnels of the fourth line of the metro will run above existing tunnels. After the completion of the new metro station, Baross Square will be completely transformed. The surface traffic will be renewed and rearranged, the subways will become attractive, and public transport will be faster and better. The station structure is likely to be completed in the autumn of 2009.
