From April 5th the Kálvin Square will be closed for traffic for two years

2 april 2007

the closure of Kálvin Square from the Vámház Boulevard is required due to the construction of the Kálvin Square station of the 4th line of the Metro. The construction site may only be crossed by the vehicles of BKV.

The preparatory works of the construction of the Kálvin Square metro station have been in progress since February; at two ends of the Kálvin Square the works to replace utilities were completed. The „lion’s share” of these works will only follow now: starting from April 5th the Vámház Boulevard section Kálvin Square will have to be closed for traffic for two years. From this day on only the BKV vehicles may cross the work site, which will be fully closed for road traffic.
The closure of the Kálvin Square will remain in effect with minor or major changes up until the end of 2008, when the construction of the metro station structure will be completed. In the next few weeks of the construction the sewer conduit of 2m diameter will be relocated and replaced; after that the „diaphragm walls” of the station structure may commence. The diaphragm wall is essentially a vertical reinforced concrete wall dug into the soil, constituting also the external wall of the station. (For details visit our website at http://www.metro4.hu/hogyanepul_allomas_anim.php).
Starting from April 5th trams the 49 will travel from the Pest side only until the Lónyay Street; on the Buda side the currently running substitution buses will travel until the Deák Square along an extended route; motorists may proceed from the Baross Street towards the Múzeum Boulevard and Kecskeméti Street and from the Múzeum Boulevard toward the Kecskeméti Street and Üllői Road. Motorists coming from the Szabadság Bridge may leave the Vámház Boulevard via the Sóház Street or the Lónyay Street.
This traffic order will change from August 21st due to the reconstruction and closure of the Szabadság Bridge.
Despite the effort of the experts to assign the ideal routes via traffic redirection the local traffic capacity is likely to reduce to a considerable degree. For this reason all citizens of Budapest are kindly asked to keep off the lower quay, the Vámház Boulevard and the Szabadság Bridge and use alternative routes. Motorists are asked to be extra circumspect and patient when driving in this locality.
Obviously the Metropolitan Municipality, the BKV Private Limited Company and the construction companies involved in the project will make every effort to cause as little inconvenience as possible throughout the completion of works. The residents will continuously receive updates about any changes until the completion of construction works.
Not only stations of the Metropolitan and subways will be built, but the streets and squares affected will also be renovated. The streets, tram tracks, the Szabadság Bridge and the parking lots will be renovated to the standards and expectations of the 21st century. The Kálvin Square, the Fővám Square and the surroundings of the University will also be reconstructed and redecorated. State-of-the-art machinery, safe methods and processes will be used to carry out all works.
