EVEN THE SZENT GELLÉRT TÉR STATION OF METRO LINE M4 IS READY TO RECIEVE PASSENGERS

22 november 2013

The National Transport Authority has issued the completion certificate for the third station of Metro Line M4, Szent Gellért tér; the Test in Traffic Operation can thus begin at the end of March next year. Obtaining the completion certificates is smooth thanks to the cooperation between the mayor, the government commissioner, the authority, DBR Metro Project Directorate and the contractors concerned.

The Szent Gellért tér station of Metro Line M4 is between Móricz Zsigmond körtér and Fővám tér, and is adjacent to the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the Danube and the tram tracks. The platform is 32 and the tracks are 34 metres below ground level. Some four escalators and two lifts will carry passengers from platform to subway level, from where two exits lead to the surface: the centre of the square can be reached via a stairway and the university by way of two lifts and a staircase. This station is also fully accessible, i.e. passengers with wheelchairs can reach and board trains from street level all the way down without any obstruction at all.

The exit in the centre of the square, near the tram stop, is partly surrounded by a limestone pool and a waterfall. Within the station, there is a huge, 40-metre long internal space with the now emblematic beam structures, and, down below, the platform tunnels reaching also 40 metres long under the buildings of the university are for embarking and alighting from the trains. The internal space is divided into two parts also vertically: those coming through the escalator entrance will land first on a midway passage, and then, stepping on to the escalators in another direction, go down towards the platform level. The characteristic motif of the concrete beams appears in several places: the flooring of the midway passage and the patterns of the station seats. The image of the station is dominated by the harmony of fair-face concrete and decorative-rust surfaces and the mosaic walls at platform level.
