DUE TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE INCLINED SHAFT OF THE SZENT GELLÉRT SQUARE STATION OF THE 4TH LINE OF THE METROPOLITAN A SHORT SECTION OF THE UPPER QUAY ON THE BUDA SIDE WILL BE CLOSED FOR TRAFFIC STARTING FROM 16 JUNE

2 june 2008

The closure of the lower quay due to the construction of the main sewer on the Buda side did not cause major traffic jams, and no particular congestion of traffic is expected due to the temporary closing of traffic from 16 June to 20 August of the section of the Műegyetem (Technical University) Quay between Bertalan Lajos Street and Szent Gellért Square. For the passengers crossing this area this summer period is the most advantageous due to summer holidays and school break-up.

As we have informed earlier the residents of Budapest, the construction works of the inclined shaft connected with the Szent Gellért Square station of the 4th line of the metropolitan will commence a year earlier than scheduled, harmonized with the construction of the main sewer on the Buda side. This harmonization of the two projects calls for the temporary simultaneous closure of the lower and upper quays on the Buda side from 16 June to 20 August. Such decision was mainly motivated by the shorter duration of traffic restrictions.

As a result of joint closure the Szent Gellért Square station of the 4th line of the metropolitan may be completed one year earlier and there will be no need for closing this section of the quay for the duration of construction of the underpass to begin next year on the side of the Budafoki Street. The suggested alternative routing is still Bertalan Lajos Street and Bartók Béla Road. Following the completion of construction of the inclined shaft the original traffic will be restored on 20 August 20 on the Szent Gellért Square and the section of the upper quay in front of the Technical University may also be returned to traffic. The lower quay is expected to open for car traffic next spring only.

For ten weeks similar traffic restrictions were introduced on the Pest side in the summer of 2007, yet the works did not cause major traffic jams in the road traffic. The tunnel builder TBMs are scheduled to reach Fővám Square at the end of this year. After that time the servicing of TBMs and the transportation of excavated earth towards the Lágymányosi Bridge will take place from Szent Gellért Square along the section of the upper quay and lower quay returned to traffic. Only one truck per 15 minutes will carry earth along the quay, which is not expected to hinder traffic in any way, as it has not hindered traffic so far in other areas either.
