Bochkor and Boros bore the underground tunnel
Upon the initiative of Miklós Hagyó, Deputy Mayor, the bid for the eponymy of the two tunnel boring machines currently having the not quite poetic names TBM S355 and TBM S354 started on April 2.
Miklós Hagyó invited the residents of Budapest to christen the two TBMs. As he said earlier, he wanted to make the construction of the fourth line of metro the personal matter of all residents of Budapest. Becoming an eponym means to be on intimate terms with the subject of eponymy, even if it is a project.
The Municipality of Budapest set no limitations regarding the choice of names; the proposals could include names of historical or living personalities, or even objects.
The media and the general public followed the announcement and the news about eponymy with a great interest.
The seven-strong pre-selection committee composed, among others, of popular personalities such as Péter Hajdú broadcaster, György Korda and Klári Balázs singers, received more than two thousand proposals from six thousand senders. The jury selected the twenty doublets that they deemed commendable, and the voting was open till last midnight.
The voting was closed earlier than scheduled because the server in Budapest broke down on several occasions due to the continuous overload. This put at risk the on-line webcasting of the General Meeting of the Municipality of Budapest, which has been a popular way for many Budapest residents to follow the work of this panel. Luckily there was a good opportunity because of the huge differences between votes, so the winners will be announced at the session of the General Meeting tomorrow.
Miklós Hagyó, Deputy Mayor, thanked the voters and all the participants for the ideas and their contribution to the success of eponymy, and for adopting the case of the largest public transport project in Hungary.
The final result of voting is as follows:
