Be the eponym of the tunnel boring machines of the 4th line of the Metro!

3 april 2007

Be the eponym of the nickname of the tunnel boring machines of 1600 HP each working beneath the surface of Budapest! The Budapest portal (www.budapest.hu) invites your ideas and the residents will pick the best names after voting.

On April 3rd the tunnel building and tunnel boring machines set on their 106 week journey. That is to say, the 7.2 kilometre long tunnel of the 4th line of the Metro between the Kelenföld Railway Station and the Keleti Railway Station is planned to be completed in 106 weeks. The cutting-edge construction machinery includes in the first place the tunnel boring machines responsible for building the tunnels. The two machines to be launched soon are the size of a train, yet they are anonymous. They will build nine more stations and we shall follow their passage for more than years. Eponymy of large projects an old tradition in Budapest; for example the temporary pontoon bridges replacing the bridges destroyed during World War II also received nicknames from the Budapest residents. The tunnel boring machines also deserve to have a real name instead of „TMB S355” and „TMB S354”.
In every country of the world the launching of tunnel construction is, by tradition, a ceremonial event, whether or not the tunnel is built for road, railway or metro traffic. The tunnel contractors and miners consecrate and put up at the tunnel entrance the statue of Saint Barbara, and elect the symbolic godmothers of the tunnel; they will “baptize” the tunnels and they will be the unofficial helpers of tunnel contractors and metro builders. On Tuesday the tunnels were baptized and named according to this tradition. However, upon the recommendation of Miklós Hagyó, Deputy Mayor of Budapest, the eponym of the tunnel boring machines will be elected from the ranks of the Budapest residents.
From today on our site at www.Budapest.hu will be open for eponymy for the tunnel boring machines in the framework of a polling competition via the net. For one week your ideas and names will be received via this site. After seven days the twenty best names will be published on the site and the site will be open for voting. The tunnel boring machines will be named by the two eponyms collecting the largest number of votes.
The eponymy will take place before the launching of the second tunnel boring machine, so the already named twins will carry on fighting rock for a better, environmentally friendly and state-of-the-art public transport and traffic in Budapest worthy of a true metropolis.
The media is invited to inform the larger public about our naming competition.
Please follow the voting at www.budapest.hu; the residents of Budapest and the press will be informed about the final outcome of voting as soon as possible.
