Another metro station will be built: the works are commenced on the Köztársaság Square

21 march 2007

At the end of March the construction of the latest station of the 4th line of the Metro is commenced at the Népszínház Street. The construction begins on March 21st with the hoarding and fencing off of the work site in the first days. At the beginning the works will call only for minor traffic limitations and the car parks near the work site will cease.

The preparatory works of station construction will likely commence in the first half of April with the replacement in several stages of utilities, including gas, electrical, public lighting conduits, sewer and telephone, on the work site and along the section of the road pavement and sidewalk in front of buildings No. 5 to 13 Köztársaság Square. These works require the demolition of the sidewalk and road paving, therefore the carriageway will be closed for traffic in one direction causing some inconvenience for a short while.
Having completed the replacement of utilities the earlier traffic order is likely to be restored in the locality by the end of April. Apart from the ceased car parks the metro construction will cause no further traffic changes. In April and May the the excavation of earth and construction of the diaphragm wall will commence at the construction site.
The station construction will likely begin at the beginning of May. At that time the construction of the so called diaphragm wall will begin. This is essentially a vertical wall dug in the ground constituting the external wall of the station. These works will be accompanied with noise and dust mainly at the beginning, but the staff of the construction companies will do their best to minimize the inconveniences.
The intensity of downtown traffic and air pollution are expected to reduce after the implementation of the metro. Upon the completion of the project a new, fast and modern means compliant with the European standards will be added to the public transport of the locality. The Köztársaság Square and section of Népszínház Street in the neighbourhood will become an attractive and modern part of the city.
The likely schedule of the construction of the Népszínház Street Metro station starting from March 21st is as follows:
 The car park on Köztársaság Square will gradually cease (From March);
 For a short time only one traffic lane per each carriageway will be available for the motorists at the corner of the Köztársaság Square near Népszínház Street (April);
 The station structure construction begins: excavation of earth and preparatory works (April /May), diaphragm wall construction (May);
 The works continue with the excavation of earth within the diaphragm wall, then the reinforced concrete base plate will be completed;
 The tunnel boring machines cross the station at the beginning of 2009; and
 The internal construction of the station structure will be continued.
