20 pairs of names remain in the ring – Having submitted your ideas now cast your vote at the Budapest Portal!

12 april 2007

If you have not joined in the competition initiated by Miklós Hagyó, Deputy Mayor, you may still join in! If you have brain-stormed in the past days, your votes are invited now! Today the second round of the eponymy for the tunnel boring machines begins!

Visit the Budapest Portal at www.budapest.hu for the twenty pairs of names selected by the panel of judges. The site will be open for two weeks for votes for the names of the two tunnel boring machines working along the 4th line of the Metro for more than two years. The selection panel picked the short-listed names from 2000 ideas submitted in 6000 E-mails, and after long debates 20 names remained finally on the short list. Among others, the list includes doubles such Dávid and Góliát (David and Goliath) who were made famous by their biblical fight; Gilda and Linda (the meaning of the first member of this pair of Greek and German is shield carrier; the meaning of the second name is shield made of lime tree). You may also vote for the famous comic figures of the Budapest cabaret of the turn of the 19th century: Hacsek and Sajó, and the popular anchormen of the Boomerang radio broadcast: Lali and Bocsi. According to the promise made by Miklós Hagyó, Deputy Mayor, the leadership of the Metropolitan Municipality will take into account the outcome of voting at the eponymy of the tunnel boring machines due in two weeks time.
The Metropolitan Municipality did not leave the selection of the short listed names to pure chance: the members of the jury were popular stars such as Péter Hajdú broadcaster, György Korda and Klári Balázs singers, who have proven their talent in naming a number of well-liked broadcasts and hits. Of course the transport profession was also represented in the panel, including Attila Antal, General Director of BKV Private Limited Company, Árpád Balogh, the recently appointed director of the DBR Metro Project Directorate of BKV Private Limited Company, and Dóra Czuk, Head of the PR Bureau of the Mayor’s Office. The chairman of the panel was Miklós Hagyó, Deputy Mayor, the initiator of this project.
„The decision was extremely difficult. It is truly amazing how many people were intrigued by this game. It is truly indicative of the willingness of the residents to be involved in interesting projects” – said Péter Hajdú after the disclosure of the final decision of the panel. György Korda and Klári Balázs found the invitation extremely flattering: „It was a good feeling to be part of a game that serves the purpose of popularizing a project, the 4th line of the Metro, which will modernize, as if by magic, public transport and the life of the city in the next decades.” Miklós Hagyó, Deputy Mayor, said that his initiative was important because of the „….personal involvement in eponymy. By giving a nickname to someone or something you make him/her or it your own forever..” “I should like to see” – he added – “that this little game of naming the tunnel boring machines brings closer the cause of the 4th line of the Metro to each and every resident of Budapest and citizen of Hungary. This will be the vehicle that belongs to everybody who visits the Capital.”
