PICTURE OF M4 FROM BAROSS SQUARE

10 september 2010

As publicly known the Baross Square station of metro 4 is being built by the so called Milan method, so – in accordance with the environment authority’s permit in order to minimize dust and noise pollution – the final ceiling to the surface was built as the first step and subsequently underneath the excavation was carried out by mining method and at the same time the final structure was built also (walls, pillars, horizontal supports).

The so called Milan method is a frequently used technology, because the surface may be handed back the earliest by the help of this method. Though it did not happen so for Baross Square, as the tunnel builder has reached the last station of the first section after more than a year delay. Tunneling is always the leading methodology of a metro construction, as long the tunnels are not completed, structures of the stations cannot be fully completed, and also the interior builder and the track builder cannot start working. Delays of the tunneling works unfortunately ensued delays to the surface works.

Ribs on the station’s final ceiling served as temporary support, which now, upon completion of the permanent structure, are not needed, so the contractor has recently started to remove them. At Baross Square and within its vicinity a station and a lead tunnel are also being constructed. Final ceiling of the lead tunnel below Thököly Road is also completed, here now the road works are being carried out in order that in the autumn the DBR – albeit leading it in front of the station yet, but – may hand over 2x1 traffic lanes at this part, and respectively a bus lane towards downtown.

The final ceiling, which the contractor is working now on, is pertinent to the station, where they will need to retain one of the openings for the interior builder and the track builder contractors, so here – as opposed to the lead tunnel – the final road will be built within the frame of the surface finishing works by the end of next year (this time will the Thököly Road be straight again). Hopefully DBR will be able to tender the open public procurement process for the Baross Square surface finishing works still in the autumn, from which a contract may be made at the beginning of next year.

At the renewed Baross Square in front of the Keleti Railway Station a stone paved walking area will link Thököly Road and Kerepesi Road. Over the triangle shaped square above the station will the new pedestrian subway be built, the square will be extended with a larger park, the contractor-to-be will significantly increase the rate of green areas, and respectively the Baross statue will be placed back to its original location.
