UITP CONFERENCE IN BUDAPEST ON AUTOMATED METROS

Between 11 and 12 May 2015, the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) hosted the annual conference of the Observatory of Automated Metros of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) where BKV and DBR experts were also invited to participate.

On the part of BKK, Zoltán Nyul, Head of Division for Strategy, Development and Investment, opened the conference, emphasizing that it was apposite to hold the conference in Budapest as Metro Line M4 is automated and its testing is currently underway. Participants heard several presentations on automated lines, with BKV Zrt. DBR Metro Project Directorate giving an account of Budapest’s Metro Line M4. Project Director Dr. Piroska Horváth spoke about the organizational and contractual issues of the project, and the role the line is to have in the public transport of the city, while project manager Lajos Darai, who has participated in the project from the beginning, gave a detailed exposition of the characteristic features, the process of construction, the challenges and the successful implementation of the automated line.

At the end of the second day, the participants visited the Kálvin tér station and the Depot at Kelenföld of M4, and were acquainted with the fully automated operation of the shed and its facilities. In the course of this, they could observe the remote preparation of a train, the automated testing of the brakes and the doors, and then, boarding, they could experience the train automatically move out of the depot on to the main line track and then return again into the shed.

Seated in Brussels, UITP (L’Union internationale des transports publics) is a network of public transport authorities, firms, research institutes and stakeholders and service providers in the transport market. Its activities span all the areas of public transport, including metro, bus, tram, suburban train, and water traffic. With its 3400 strong membership from 92 countries, it provides a platform for world-wide cooperation and exchange of experience, while it represents and promotes public transport throughout the world. The Observatory of Automated Metros is a standing body of the UITP, the mission of which is to share and distribute the latest and most relevant information on automated metro lines.
